State Agency Specific Schedules
The South Carolina Department of Archives and History has developed a new process for establishing and approving specific record retention schedules for state government agencies. This process involves working in collaboration with state agency staff to conduct a comprehensive review and analysis of agency functions and activities and to appraise the value of the records associated with those functions and activities. Records having permanent retention value are identified first. Then retention periods are assigned to all other records based upon how long they are needed to fulfill the administrative, fiscal, and legal requirements of each agency.
The new schedules include implementation requirements and recommendations in addition to the authorized retentions and dispositions. The pilot agencies for the new process include the Department of Social Services (DSS), the Medical Malpractice Patients' Compensation Fund, and the Judicial Department. The Functional Analysis and Records Retention Schedules for DSS and the Medical Malpractice Patients' Compensation Fund can be viewed and downloaded from the links below.* The Judicial Department and subsequent agencies will be added as they become available.
